Here is a quick summary of the roll call vote in the Senate last week, passing amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance act of 1978. This bill, signed into law by President Bush, includes retroactive immunity for telecommunication companies that assisted the administration with its illegal warrantless wiretapping program. You can find more on the US Senate website.
It is interesting, and certainly disappointing for many on the left, to note that Senator Obama, who once promised to filibuster any version of FISA that contained retroactive immunity for telecoms¹, abandoned that promise and voted for the bill. Senator Clinton joined an almost exclusively Democrat faction voting against the bill, while Senator McCain did not vote on the controversial legislation.
